stairs in the sea
by Danny Leslie
Near an edge around the sea when tide is at its lowest point, stairs which appear as stepping stones into the sea push their way up through the surface.   Even though each stair is disguised by a natural form with a covering of sifted sand,  stairs under the surface of the sea become perceivable for a moment from shore.

At that very moment when just one step of the stairs is pushed slightly above the surface, a musical gate can be heard singing onshore.

Then just as a ballerina steps toe to toe, children dance on steps which lead deep beyond an Edge around the sea.   They glide without effort as though on a magic carpet until the tide has risen and the spell is broken.  Called they are, but lured back by those who walk behind the shore.   Come away from the steps for the tide remains high.  Follow us and let us all play above a city where the sand is in the sky.

Now go!  Be gone!  Run and play they now say.  Run and play, the streets are free.  Run and play and let us be.  Well, one more chant but sing it from the streets.   Please, sing it like this.   "This is the house and we are children playing in the house  sitting upon our mountain."   But eventually,

playtime is over...   and in the while of the time it would take sounds from a child to fade,  someone says,  'i want to walk upon the sand but here the sand is in the sky.'    Changing voices bounce.   Who wrapped us in this coat where we now hide?   Is it black?   Is it gray?   Is this blue?.   Is it heavy for me?   Is it a weave heavy for you?

Yet still know in which way it is told.   Climb your towers and tighten your ties.  Reach for rubies in the skies.
